Food Paintings

In 1996, the Joy of Cooking was revised. Absent were old favorites, like Jell-O and macaroni and cheese that didn’t fit into the food culture of the day. These paintings provoke memories of family dinners and church picnics.

Ancestor painting
I know little about my maternal ancestors. Assimilation was more important to them than preserving their heritage. These paintings are my attempt to understand my Russian roots through family photographs. Magnifying the faces and places in order to see beyond them, I realized that this history I was painting was to be an inventive one.
